Visalia fired up for fire department’s 150th birthday
Instead of cake, Visalia Fire Department kicks off year-long celebration of 150th anniversary with free pancake breakfast
VISALIA – The Visalia Fire Department has been putting out fires longer than Visalia has been an incorporated city.
The Visalia Fire Department was established in 1869, five years before the city incorporated on Feb. 27, 1874. In honor of the VFD’s 150th anniversary, firefighters and members of the Visalia Breakfast Lions Club kicked off a year-long celebration by inviting the community to a Community Pancake Breakfast on Feb. 23 at Visalia Fire Department’s Station 51 in downtown.
“2019 year marks the 150th Anniversary of the Visalia Fire Department and we’re kicking off the year-long celebration with this community pancake breakfast,” shared Visalia Fire Chief Doug McBee. “We look forward to welcoming everyone to Station 51 this Saturday as it will be the first of many celebrations we host this year.”
The family friendly event featured a free pancake breakfast, informational booths, fire apparatus on display, photo opportunities and members of the Visalia Fire Department on hand to answer questions and greet the public.
“I’m incredibly proud of the Visalia Fire Department (VFD) team. I’ve never worked with a more dedicated, caring and knowledgeable group of professional firefighters,” added Chief McBee. “We’re proud to be in our 150th year of serving Visalia and we look forward to celebrating with our community.”
Today the VFD serves from six fire stations and seven first line fire apparatus that consist of five fire engines and two aerial apparatus. Twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, Visalia Fire provides “all risk” service to approximately 136,500 residents covering over 40 square miles.
