It’s show time in Visalia!

Visalia Unified School District will continue its tradition of high energy student performances this month with five musicals in its spring semester lineup.

“For many years, our community has grown accustomed to excellent high school performing arts productions,” said outgoing Superintendent Craig Wheaton. “Everything from band to dance — we have wonderful performances all year long and school musicals are perhaps the best example of this long standing tradition.”

El Diamante opened the musical season with its production of “Catch Me If You Can.” The show premiered on Jan. 15 and continues on Thursday, Jan. 21 through Sunday, Jan. 24. The show is very entertaining and showcases the musical and dance talents of the Miners.

February begins with Mt. Whitney’s production of “High School Musical.” The Pioneer performances begin on Thursday, Feb. 4 and continue through Saturday, Feb. 6. Mt. Whitney has an incredible cast and is excited to perform the crowd-pleasing modern musical.

If you are looking for a classic musical, Redwood High School will be presenting “West Side Story.” The classic Bernstein and Sondheim play opens on Thursday, Feb. 18 and runs through Saturday, Feb. 20. This 1950s love story is timeless and resonates with audiences of all ages.

The curtain call of the high school musical theater parade will be Golden West’s production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” The school’s drama productions have blazed a trail of grand scale performances with more than 100 students participating in the musical April 6-9.

But it isn’t just high schools continuing this tradition as Green Acres Middle School presents “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” Despite their young age, Green Acres students put on a high quality musical each spring semester. The show includes more than 100 students and staff, including the principal who always performs as part of the tradition. The production is scheduled for Feb. 11-14.

“If you have never attended a Green Acres musical production you really must take time to do so,” Wheaton added.

This year’s musical selections are excellent choices for family entertainment. Parents, relatives and fans of musical theater are encouraged to get their tickets early because several shows could be sellouts.
