Year in Review Part I: Local sports fields find favor

Old teams defended their league and section titles while some new faces took home some hardware

TULARE COUNTY – The 2018-2019 school year continued to be good to individual and team sports throughout the Foothills area. Here are some of their achievements:
August
Aug. 15 – The Woodlake Tigers ended their 16-year drought in the Valencia Cup with a 28-15 win over the Exeter Monarchs in Exeter.
September
Sept. 28 – The Woodlake Tigers football team snapped the Strathmore Spartans 13-game East Sequoia League winning streak with a 38-20 win in Spartan Stadium.
October
Oct. 26 – The Woodlake Tigers football team won their first East Sequoia League title since 2015 with a 48-15 win over the Granite Hills Grizzlies.
November
Nov. 3 – The Exeter Monarchs volleyball team successfully defended their Division II Valley Championship with a 3-2 win over the El Diamante Miners.
Nov. 6 – The Exeter Monarchs volleyball team earned the highest seed in the Division II State Playoffs in program history at No. 2, but lost 3-0 to the Bishop Montgomery Knights in the opening round.
Nov. 6 – Exeter’s Rosalind Dixon won back-to-back Central Sequoia League titles with a time of 20:12.5.
Nov. 7 – Lindsay’s McKaylie Caesar won her third straight East Sequoia League Individual Title with a time of 18:06.08. Her time helped the Cardinal women’s team to win their first ESL team title.
Nov. 15 – McKaylie Caesar won her second straight Division IV Valley Championship with a time of 18:16.1.
Nov. 16 – Cousins Jaykob Acosta and Corinne Acosta each signed national letters of intent. Jaykob signed a D-I scholarship to play baseball at CSU Bakersfield. Corinne joined the Fresno Pacific Sunbird volleyball program.
Nov. 16 – The Strathmore Spartans football team won their third straight Division VI Valley Championship with a 42-12 victory over the Sierra Pacific Golden Bears.
Nov. 24 – McKaylie Caesar placed 10th overall with a time of 18:24.9 in the Division IV State Championships, the highest placement of any runner to have competed for Lindsay High School.
Nov. 30 – The Strathmore Spartans football team won their third straight regional championship, and second Southern California Title in three years when they defeated the Adelanto Saints 28-7.
December
Dec. 15 – The Strathmore Spartans football team appeared in their third straight CIF State Championship Bowl Game but lost 49-0 to the Hilmar Yellowjackets in Division 6AA.
