LINDSAY – A pair of Cardinals will be flocking to the East-West Tulare-Kings All-Star Football game next month at Golden West’s Groppetti Community Stadium. Angel Perez and Ricardo Navarro were among the first East Squad members announced earlier last week.
Perez was a three-year member on the Cardinals’ varsity team where he played on both sides of the ball. Offensively, he was a major threat at the wide receiver position. He hauled in 40 catches for 604 yards and six touchdowns during his senior season. It was an upgrade from his junior season that saw him only catch three passes for 30 yards, and a single touchdown. On the defensive side he was bashing heads from the linebacker position. He had been a staple on that side of the ball for two seasons, but his senior year was his best. He had a career high 54 total tackles, and six tackles for loss.
“I can’t wait,” Perez said. “I am very excited about the chance to play.”
In the all-star game, Perez hopes to make a big impact on both sides of the ball in order to get the win for the East squad.
Besides stepping onto a high school football field one last time, Perez is looking forward to meeting other players from around the area.
Perez will be attending West Hills College-Coalinga in the fall, and will be playing football for the Falcons.
When Navarro got the call that he was one of the East area all-stars it was a surprise. He had missed most of the Cardinals’ final game of the season with a foot injury.
“I didn’t know I was going to get this opportunity,”
Navarro was a two-year starter along the Cardinals’ defensive line where he wrapped up 119 ball carriers. His senior season he had 55 tackles. Twelve of those he brought down behind the line of scrimmage. He caused three fumbles and recovered one as well.
Navarro will be attending College of the Sequoias where he will enroll in the police academy. It is unclear as to whether or not he will play football for the Giants.
