Monarchs of the Week and Sports Extra


Each week, Exeter Union High School coaches will nominate outstanding players in each sport. These players will be featured here in the newspaper as well as at Kirkman’s VIP Pizza. This week’s players are listed below.

Soto drops double-double for Spartans
Strathmore traveled to Riverdale last Thursday night and came back with an impressive 68-22 win. Jazmin Soto posted the first double-double of the year when she finished with 37 points and 12 steals. Vanessa Chapa finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds. The Spartans now have an opening round matchup with the Tulare Western Mustangs in the George Glover Memorial Tournament on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Blazers edge Spartans on the pitch
Both Golden West and Strathmore met in the final game of the Harold Young Tournament at Buchanan. It was Golden West who came away with the narrow win 2-1. Isabella Baez had the only goal for Strathmore. Golden West returned home last night to face the Reedley Pirates. Final of that game was reached after press time. Strathmore will travel to Visalia to play the CVC Cavaliers at 6 p.m.

Lindsay falls in OT to Orosi 46-43
Regulation could not settle a battle of the Cardinals on Saturday. Orosi edged Lindsay 46-43 by scoring seven points in the first overtime. Orosi’s Jose Ramos scored 14 points. Lindsay returned home last night and played the Farmersville Aztecs. Final results of that game were reached after press time.

Cougars maul Spartans
Strathmore traveled up to McFarland last week and lost 76-27. The Spartans will look for a better result this Friday as they hit the road to Wasco to play the Tigers at 7 p.m.

Cardinals fall short in comeback attempt
Lindsay traveled up to Easton last Thursday night to play the Washington Union Panthers. After falling behind 3-0 in the first, the Cardinals mounted a comeback. Lindsay was able to score two but not the equalizer. The Panthers hung on to win 3-2. Marcos Ceballos and Moises Bentencourt each had one goal. Lindsay hit the road last night to face the Tulare Western Mustangs. Match results were reached after press time.

Monarchs even record at 1-1
After suffering a 3-0 loss to El Diamante to open up the season, the Monarchs bounced back with a 3-2 win over Porterville. The Monarchs got on the board early with two goals in the first half and added another in the second. Goals for Exeter were scored by Karina Mendez, Isabel Martinez, and Lexe Cortez. Next up for Exeter is a showdown at Farmersville against the Aztecs tonight at 6 p.m.

Aztecs top Panthers for first win
Farmersville hosted Parlier on Saturday and came away with a 40-25 win. Next up for the Aztecs is a their opening game of the Farmersville Tournament against Hamilton on Thursday at 8 p.m.
