Spartans capture sixth straight title in a row

strathmore – For the sixth year in a row the Strathmore Spartans (16-5-1; 9-0-1) are the champions of the East Sequoia League (ESL). The Spartans were able to accomplish that feat with wins over the Corcoran Panthers (5-12-6; 0-7-2) on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 5-0, and Friday, Feb. 10, 7-0.
“Hopefully we are peaking at the right time,” said Strathmore head coach Hector Gonzalez.
The ability to keep on winning despite being such a small school is something that the Spartans have had to deal with all along.
Having limited practice due to the rain caused the Spartans to come out flat in the Feb. 8 matchup against the Panthers. They were able to rebound quite nicely as they scored five goals though out the rest of the game.
In the game against the Panthers on Feb. 10, the Spartans fired 40 shots on goal.
Andrea Muguia led the way as three of her shots crossed the goal line. While on the defensive side of the ball the Spartans held the Panthers to just two shots the entire game.
Seniors like Taylor Alkire and D-II signee Ally Hollow are two such players.
In their final regular season game Alkire was second in goals as she had two. As for Holloway, she was able to get one to cross the goal line. Alkrie also finished the season with the most goals in the ESL with 49.
“They played together since they were little kids so they work well and complement each other,” said Coach Hector.
Now the Spartans look to continue their valley title run this season. The Spartans are two time defending D-IV champions.
“I’ve never went and studied other teams,” said Coach Hector. “I believe work on your team and be ready to play.”
Earning the third seed the Spartans will have a bye and play the winner of the sixth seed in South or the eleventh seed in Caruthers.
