Spartans charge through competition to ESL title
The Spartans have amassed an impressive 21 wins this season. And with their recent triumph over the Corcoran Panthers on Thursday, Feb. 11 they have once again to pulled off a flawless, 10-0 league record. The team has more than deserved the coveted No. 1 seed in the Division IV bracket.
On Feb. 9 the Strathmore Spartans fans exited the stadium pleased as they observed their soccer team triumph over the host Sierra Pacific Golden Bears, 7-0 in a league bout. As the two teams faced off, the odds were in favor of the Spartans as they had previously defeated the Golden Bears, 5-1.
History repeated itself as junior Taylor Alkire dominated the field securing three goals in the match. However, Alkire was not the only Spartan to make it past Sierra Pacific’s goalie, Strathmore’s Kristen Gomez made two goals, while Rosie Platas and Ally Holloway both secured one goal each. With the victory over the Golden Bears, Strathmore moved its record to 20-3 on the year.
With one final game before entering into the CIF Central Section D4 playoffs, the Spartans hosted Corcoran to battle the Panthers in a East Sequoia bout on Thursday. It was the Spartans who drew blood first, as Alkire cleared the net four minutes into the first half. The Panthers were quick to answer back as Strathmore’s goal Jackie Orozco was unable to defend the net allowing Corcoran to put a point on the board.
With a perfect league record on the line, Strathmore went into overdrive as sophomore Andrea Murguia cleared the Panther’s net. Moments later Alkire snuck by Corcoran’s defenders, extending the Spartan’s lead 3-1, with over 13 minutes of play left in the first half. Opposition continued to mount against the Panthers as an attempt by Kristen Gomes cut through the net, leaving the score 4-1, ending the first.
As the second half opened the Panther’s attempted to regain control over the game. However, the Spartans were too much for the Panthers as Rosie Platas quickly moved up the field, passing the ball to Holloway, who managed to secure the goal. Holloway went on to score another goal ending the match 6-1, Strathmore.
Strathmore will begin playoffs this week as they face the winner of the Sierra and Fresno at home on Friday, Feb. 19.
