Aztecs crush Crusaders
The Farmersville Aztec girls basketball team defeated the Kings Christian Crusaders 63-5 in an East Sierra League matchup on Friday, Feb. 7 in Farmersville.
Farmersville played a tight defense, rarely allowing the Crusaders to cross the half court line. The Aztecs had built a 16-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The smothering Aztec full court press did not allow Kings Christian to score a point in the second period while they added 17 more to take a 33-3 lead into the locker room at half time.
The Crusaders did make a basket in the third period and the Aztecs added 11 more to end the third period at 44-5.
In the fourth period the game went to a running clock. The Crusaders were once again held scoreless with most of the Aztec starters out of the game. Farmersville added 19 points to give the game its final score of 63-5.
The Aztecs had a total of 33 steals in the game.
Farmersville head coach Tamara Rice said, “The team played as a team tonight and they played unselfishly. They played up to their potential. I got all the subs involved in the game because they all work so hard. We had such a heart breaking loss here last week, but the girls bounced back.”
Vanesa Duran led the Aztecs with 21 points, 13 rebounds and one assist.
“It felt good to play as a team,” said Duran. “We really gained a lot of confidence and I think we will end the season strong.”
Lupe Silva had 20 points, five rebounds and four assist.
“This is a new feeling,” said Silva. “To have the crowd cheering so much was a great feeling. The team is really connecting and we are learning a lot and getting more confident.”
Janet Garcia also had six points, six rebounds, three rebounds and three steals for the Aztecs.
