Monarchs out duel Vikings
Thursday night the Exeter Lady Monarch’s volleyball team welcomed the Kingsburg Vikings to town to as both teams continued CSL play. The Lady Monarchs would out duel the Vikings 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21) to improve to 3-1 in league and 14-7 overall.
“Everyone did really good and it was the whole team that stepped it up for this game,” said Exeter’s Freshman Olivia Harden about the play of the team.
Both teams traded leads early in the first set until Kingsburg went on a four point run to take the lead 7-4.
But the Lady Monarchs would come roaring back with a four point run of their own to reclaim the lead 8-4.
The Vikings pulled within one of the lead at 10-9. That was the closes that they would get as Exeter would go on one four-point run and three three-point runs to close out the first set 25-17.
In the second set The Lady Monarchs started right where they left off scoring the first five points of the second set and jumping out to a commanding 9-1 lead.
The Vikings did not go quietly as they pulled within two of the lead at 12-10.
Exeter answered right back to the charging Vikings going on a three point run to extend their lead to five at 15-10.
Kingsburg would get within two at 16-14 but the Lady Monarchs would pull away with a four point run late in the set and would seal it a few points later with a score of 25-18.
Both teams would trade blows early in the third set before Kingsburg pulled out to a 9-6 lead on a three point run.
Exeter would try and battle back but could only get within three of the lead at 16-13.
The Vikings would gain game point with a score of 24-16.
But a marvelous late five point surge by the Lady Monarchs nearly caught the Vikings but it was not meant to be as Kingsburg closed out the set 25-21.
With both teams battling it out in the first three sets the fourth set began no different as the Lady Monarchs and the Vikings were tied 10-10.
The Lady Monachs would pull away with a six point run to gain a 16-10 lead.
Kingsburg would not get close to Exeter until a four point run late in the set brought the score to 22-20 but The Lady Monarchs would stop all hope of a fifth and finally set as they closed out the match 25-21 and three sets to one.
Amanda Acosta led The Lady Monarchs with 13 kills and led with 24 digs.
Jacque Hutcheson had 34 assists and 19 digs
Olivia Harden had 11 kills on the night.
“She is something that this city has never seen before once she gets to her senior year,” said Exeters coach Jon Weckwerth about the play of Olivia Harden. “I have never girls from ten years ago when they talk of the legends of Exeter volleyball but she is going to match it.”
Next for the Kingsburg Vikings they travel to Selma to take on the Bears on Tuesday night.
The Exeter Lady Monarchs will host the Dinuba Emperors on Tuesday night to continue CSL play.
