‘Dogs win 11 events at UNLV invitational
The Fresno State track and field team walked away tall on Saturday as they collected 11 wins in total between the men’s and women’s teams at the UNLV Randall Cunningham Invitational held at Myron Partridge Stadium.
Meagan McKee was responsible for two wins herself, she bettered the six person field with a 48’-10.75” (14.90m) throw in the shot put on Saturday after picking up the win in the hammer throw in the only individual event scheduled Friday with a 185’-6” (56.54m) throw.
Breeauna Thompson set a personal record in the 400-meter dash clocking a time of 53.94 seconds on the way to a first-place finish. She also set a Fresno State season-best time in the 400 in the win.
Bulldog long jumper Je’Nia Sears registered a 19’-1.50” (5.83m) jump and posted an outstanding fourth win of the season at the invite. She is now a perfect 4-for-4 in first-place finishes for the 2013 season.
Of the five wins on the women’s side, Kristen Galvez took number five in the 5000m run for the ‘Dogs. Galvez clocked a time of 19:09.70, bettering five runners from San Diego and three from UNLV.
After having a week off, the men’s team came out and grabbed six wins over the weekend led by Devin Harrison who picked up wins in both the 200m dash and long jump. In the dash Harrison ran a time of 22.13 seconds, in the long jump the junior posted a 24’-6.50” (7.48m) jump. Harrison now has four first-place finishes and one second-place finish in the long jump this season.
Javelin thrower Derek Oliver registered his second win of the season while setting a new personal record with a 203’-10” (62.12m) throw on the afternoon.
Justin Lovingood recorded a season-best distance of 48’-6.75” (14.80m) in the triple jump and topped the field for his second win of the season for the ‘Dogs.
The other two wins for the Bulldogs came from distance runners Chris Grimble and Kevin Poythress. Grimble’s time of 1:58.55 was good for the win in the 800m and Poythress took the win with a time of 3:59.56 in his first 1500m run of the season.
Next week the ’Dogs will split time between the Mt. SAC relays and Bryan Clay Invitational in the greater Los Angeles area April 18-20.
