Monarchs hit the come-back trail to begin tourney
The Exeter baseball team opened the 2013 Visalia-Tulare Invitational with a 10-9 win over MiraMonte on Saturday, March 23. The Monarchs trailed 9-6 heading into the final inning before a four-run outburst in the seventh defeated the Lions
Exeter continued to win in comeback fashion later the same day when they trailed Mission Oak 2-1 after four and a half innings then scored two in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Alex Farias got the win as the Exeter starter and Garrett Pendergrast gave up only one hit in relief as the Monarchs held on for the win.
On March 25, the Monarchs pulled off yet another late-inning comeback against Morro Bay. This time they turned the game around on their final out after failing to score for the entire game. Trailing 1-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning the Monarchs made their move.
The inning began with a leadoff single by Exeter’s Tristan Kittinger followed by a sacrifice bunt by Wyatt Tilley. Eli Garver doubled down the left field line scoring Kittinger to tie the game. He set the table for Garrett Pendergrast whose RBI single scored Garver from second to win the game.
The victory bumped the Monarchs’ record up to 3-0 to in the first half of the tournament as they prepared for their matchup against Bakersfield Christian on Tuesday, March 26.
For the teams with the best records after pool play ends Tuesday, semifinal and final games will take place Wednesday, March 27.
