Firebaugh Finishes Farmersville
The 2012-13 season came to an end for the Farmersville girls soccer team on Friday Feb. 15 in a 2-1 home loss to the Firebaugh Eagles in their Quarterfinal round playoff match.
Both teams were held scoreless in the second half with offensive chances at both ends of the field, but both goalkeepers were up to the challenge with Farmersville’s Marcela Borjas making some key saves.
An early defensive lapse after the break led to an Eagles goal just two minutes into the second half.
With the Lady Aztecs forced to press forward in search of a tying goal, the Eagles took advantage of the vulnerable Farmersville defense and netted a second goal for a 2-0 lead nearly three quarters into the game.
The Aztecs were finally able to find the goal with under fourteen minutes remaining when Aylin Castro redirected a cross from Stephanie “Mimi” Alba into the corner of the net to cut the score in half. It was the third assist of the season for Alba, and for Castro, her second goal.
It would be too little, too late for the Lady Aztecs as Firebaugh was able to keep dangerous goal scorer “Mimi” Alba from finding the net. Alba finishes the season with a league best 29 goals in only 17 games played.
The Lady Aztecs finish the season with an 11-12 overall record, 5-4 in East Sierra League play, good enough for a third place finish in the regular season.
