Aztecs advance toward title

The Farmersville boys soccer team continued on their quest for a second valley championship in four years with a one-sided victory over Firebaugh 4-1 on Friday Feb. 15 in the Central Section Division VI quarter-final match in Farmersville.

Alfredo Vasquez got the scoring started fifteen minutes into the game with his 28th goal of the season when he cut into the middle of the field from the left wing, beat an Eagles defender and side-footed a shot inside the near post into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

Farmersville’s dominance continued throughout the first half as they applied relentless pressure, winning five corner kicks and three free kicks in dangerous positions, before Andres Cisneros converted one of the opportunities in the 28th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Goalkeeper Reuben Valencia was ready when called upon, making two important saves late in the half, leading to a third Aztec’s goal scored by Pedro Berber with the left foot into the side netting with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.

The Eagles came charging out of the gate for the second half applying some offensive pressure of their own and breaking through the Farmersville defense to break the shutout nearly midway through the second half.

The Aztecs would recover and shut down Firebaugh for the rest of the night, controlling the ball and spending most of the remaining time on the attack.

A second goal for Pedro Berber, his 23rd of the season, sealed the 4-1 victory for the Aztecs with under twelve minutes to play.

Farmersville moved on to the semi-final round of the Division IV playoffs to host Bakersfield Christian out of the South Sequoia League on Monday Feb. 19.
