Maurine Griggs Hamilton
A celebration of life will be held from 2-4 p.m., on Sunday, May 19 at her daughter Laura’s home in Exeter for Maurine Griggs Hamilton of Exeter. Maurine passed away April 27 in Visalia at the age of 86.
Maurine was born in Exeter on June 16, 1926 to Al and Margaret Griggs. She grew up in Exeter where she met her husband Bill Hamilton. They were married on August 5, 1945. For their honeymoon the couple drove across the United States and began their married lives in New York, where Bill Hamilton was stationed as a pilot for Pan American Airlines. From New York their next station was in Damascus, Syria, where Maurine was one of the few women to drive a car.
The Hamilton’s returned to the United States and were stationed in New York and then in San Francisco. They had three children, William Hamilton, Laura Hamilton and Julia (Hamilton) Satterfield.
In 1955 the family moved to Hong Kong where they would live for four and a half years. While in Hong Kong, Maurine developed her artistic talents, painting many Chinese watercolors. In 1960 the Hamilton’s returned to California. Maurine and Bill lived in Saratoga for 38 years.
Bill and Maurine traveled extensively and enjoyed many worldwide adventures, including, Antarctica, the Easter Islands and Machu Picchu. They returned to their hometown of Exeter in 1998.
Maurine was preceded in death by her husband Bill Hamilton, their son William Hamilton and son-in-law Bill Galloway.
Maurine is survived by her daughters, Laura Hamilton and Julia Satterfield, son-in-law Bob Satterfield, grandchildren, Luke Higdon, Nicole McLawrence and Chad Satterfield, grandson-in-law Jim McLawrence and great-grandson, Dylan McLawrence.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society/Exeter Relay for Life.
