Nancy Loraine Stone of Tulare, Calif. died on June 16, 2019 peacefully at her home surrounded by family. She was 65 years old.
Born in 1953 in Fontana, Calif. to parents Hal and Loraine Staudenmayer, Nancy was the eldest of three daughters. She earned a B.A. in linguistics at UC Riverside, where she met her first husband, Dave McElroy. Nancy and Dave moved to Porterville in the mid-1970s having their only child, Jenny, in 1978. As a stay at home mom, Nancy also worked at Porterville State Hospital, taught adult school, ESL classes, and worked at Sierra Vocational Services. Later in life, Nancy continued her education at the Claremont School of Theology and served as a local pastor at Springville, Riverbend, and Exeter United Methodist Churches. She also spent several years working at College of Sequoias as a writing specialist and as adjunct faculty.
While pastor at the Exeter Methodist Church, Nancy met and married Chris Stone. They spent many happy years together, along with his children, Timothy and Alyssa, on Chris’ mother-in-law’s walnut ranch in the Visalia area and recently, in Tulare. Nancy loved a good book, cats and many pets, cooking and baking for her family, and babysitting her grandchildren. She had a strong Christian faith and loved her church families, enjoyed attending and hosting bible study groups, and volunteering in many youth programs at her local church.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Chris Stone; daughter, Jenny Powell (Jeremy); grandchildren, Emily, Cameron, Garrett, and Maryalice; stepchildren, Timothy Stone (Cassandra), Alyssa Stone; step-grandchildren Abigail and Christopher; and sisters Jane Salas (Robert), and Hallie Johnson (Mark).
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents Hal and Loraine Staudenmayer; and grandparents, Oliver and Velda “G.G.” Branson, and William and Nellie Staudenmayer.
A memorial service will be held for Nancy at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at First Christian Church, 1023 N. Chinowth St. in Visalia. Memorial gifts and remembrances may be made to First Christian Church, 1023 N. Chinowth St, Visalia, CA 93291. Salser and Dillard Funeral Services have been entrusted with arrangements.
