Lynn Edward Britten

Lynn Edward Britten of Exeter, Calif. passed away at home Sunday, March 25, 2018 at the age of 93.

Born in Exeter to Younie and Salome (McFall) Britten on Feb. 19, 1925. Lynn’s paternal ancestors were among those that homesteaded in Three Rivers, Calif. He attended Exeter schools and graduated from Exeter High School in 1942. He attended Visalia Junior College (now College of the Sequoias) before enlisting with the Navy for training as a naval aviator. The training led him across the United States to at least seven different stations before the war ended. He then returned to Exeter where he married his high school sweetheart Martha Pruner on June 20, 1946 at the Exeter Methodist Church. Martha’s love of travel extended his travels beyond the U.S. to countries in Europe, the Panama Canal, Canada, Mexico and Japan. Lynn began working on his father-in-law M.N. Pruner’s ranch soon after he and Martha were married.

Lynn distributed newspapers for The Fresno Bee, Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Examiner, San Francisco Examiner and San Francisco Chronicle to Exeter and surrounding communities. He was hired at Exeter Warehouse (later acquired by Orange Belt Supply Company) as delivery driver where he worked for 30 years before retiring as the shipping/receiving manager.

He was a member of the American Legion, Exeter Sportsman Association, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and for many years was a member the Exeter Volunteer Fire Department, where he was at least once commended for a “hot rescue.” Lynn cherished his countless mornings with long-time coffee buddies at Exeter Golf Course. Family gatherings and trips for birthdays, holidays, weddings and anniversaries were among his favorites.

Lynn is survived by sons Ed and wife Sandy Britten of Fresno, Steven Britten of Exeter, Bill and wife Ronette Britten of Three Rivers, Ken and wife Diana Britten of Exeter, Tim and wife Chinayo Britten of Portland, Oregon, and daughter Carol and husband Ron Holman of Visalia. Lynn is also survived by brother Gary Britten and his wife Paulette of Wilmore, Kentucky. He is survived by 10 grandchildren Ben Britten, Emily Britten and Nick Britten (Shannon), Ronnie Zirkle (Cassie), Matt Britten (Alexandra), Michelle Benham (Keith), Samantha Britten, Zachary Holman, Jacob Holman and Shion Britten. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Kennedy Benham, Trentyn Rosing with another on the way and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Martha, his beloved wife of 56 years, and his sister Frances (Britten) Kirkman.

The family would like to thank Lynn’s neighbor and friend Wilma Hirni for sharing her wisdom and coming to our rescue countless times over the last few years.

Visitation was held on Monday, April 2 at Smith Family Chapel in Exeter. The graveside service was held at Exeter District Cemetery followed by a reception at the Exeter Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Exeter Methodist Church, American Heart Association or American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
