VISALIA – This time next year, toddlers and young children will have a place to get inside and play when its 100 degrees outside.

At its Aug. 12 meeting, the Visalia Planning Commission approved an indoor children’s playground to fill the former gym at the Sequoia Mall vacated by In-Shape Health Club. The 22,000 square foot building across the parking lot from the mall’s theater entrance will soon be home to Luv 2 Play, a company creating indoor spaces for children 0 to 12 years old to explore and learn through active play. The local franchisee is Martin Cervantes.

The company plans to install large, indoor playground structures, a small toddler playground, baby areas, video games, a ninja obstacle course, a small café for parents and an office in the building, located at 3515 S. Mooney Blvd. Luv 2 Play will also include five party rooms for birthday parties and small events.

“I think it’s a really neat project and I am looking forward to taking my own kids there,” Planning Commission Chair Brett Taylor said.

Luv 2 Play Visalia will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. There is an admission to enter and the company reports that most families stay an average of two and a half hours each trip. In his operational statement, Cervantes said the cafe will offer an array of food and drink choices, but all of the hot food options will be pre-cooked at an off-site facility, and re-heated at the café. He expects to hire 10 to 15 people with a mix of full and part-time positions, who continually clean and sanitize the play areas to ensure germ-free environments.

In a Dec. 13 letter to the Planning Commission, Luv 2 Play COO Mitchell Gold described Luv 2 Play as a family entertainment center. He said parents are always free at Luv 2 Play, and they offer affordable pricing for unlimited daily play for the kids and scheduled exercise and health education-based activities. He said research for the last 50 years has shown that play improves memory and stimulates brain growth, enhances focus during instructional time, promotes creative problem solving, encourages an active lifestyle and life-long learning.

“We believe very strongly that opening our Luv 2 Play, family fun center will be a positive influence to your community, bringing a fun and safe alternative for families when the weather outside is too much to handle, and they still want to be able to maintain that healthy and active lifestyle,” Gold wrote.

After parents pay for admission, children and parents are provided matching wristbands that are checked for each child before they are allowed to exit the facility.

“Luv 2 Play is the perfect destination to create lifelong healthy habits and family memories,” Gold wrote. “Parents are welcome to play, or hang back as their kids explore.”

Luv 2 Play currently has 15 locations in eight states and Canada. The company is preparing for a rapid expansion as it is listing Visalia as one of 20 locations coming soon to the U.S. and Canada. For more information, visit www.luv2play.com.
