Exeter motorist hits boy, 17, who was wearing dark clothing on dimly lit road
PLAINVIEW – A 17-year-old Porterville boy was hit and killed south of Plainview last week.
At about 8:45 p.m. on Friday, June 8, the 17-year-old from Porterville, whose name is being withheld pending notification of the family, was walking along a dimly lit county road without sidewalks and wearing dark clothing in the twilight hours. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Porterville Area, investigating officers determined, the juvenile was walking westbound on Avenue 192 when he was struck by a 2008 Ford. The driver, 58-year-old Consuelo Mendiola of Exeter, told officers she was unable to see the male walking in the roadway because of his clothing, the time of day and the lighting in the area.
Mendiola attempted to take evasive actions but was unable to avoid striking the juvenile. The 17 year-old male sustained fatal injuries as a result of this collision.
Mendiola was not arrested and neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor in this collision. This collision remains under investigation.
