When the church was flooded and asbestos found beneath the carpet, Leavens invited his congregation to write their favorite versus on the exposed foundation before it is recarpeted this summer. Photo submitted by Paul Leavens.
A flood was discovered on Tuesday morning in the sanctuary caused by the toilet off of the vestibule overflowing. The water ran down the inclined floor all the way to the pulpit down front and further. Pastor Paul Leavens called Mike Domres, chairman of the board and Domres immediately called Service Masters to clean and dry the flood of water on the church building carpet. Service Masters did an evaluation and found that the original flooring under the carpet is asbestos and has to be abated by professional workers. The abatement is expected to take 10 days and no one is allowed in that area while the carpet and asbestos are being removed. In the meantime, when the floor is bare, Leavens let his congregation make a lasting mark on the church.
Together Pastor Leavens and several church members put pen to foundation and scribed their favorite bible verse onto the bare floor.
Thus far, beautiful new flooring has been installed in the back hall leading to the church office and the hall way was also painted. Aside from the flooring, fortunately when a ceiling sanctuary light was being repaired, the worker discovered the wires had over heated and turned black. Now the wiring was replaced and the carpet is still waiting to be completed. Pastor Leavens is telling the community and congregation they will continue to meet in Memory Hall for worship until everything is complete.
