Visalia teacher arrested for sexting, touching student

Sycamore Valley Academy teacher shared explicit photos, made sexual contact with elementary student


TULARE COUNTY – A charter school teacher was arrested for sexual contact with a elementary school student last week.

At 10 a.m. on May 4, detectives with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department’s Crimes Against Children’s Unit responded to Sycamore Valley Academy, a K-8 charter school located on Caldwell Avenue west of Highway 99, regarding inappropriate contact between a teacher and student.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the teacher had been in contact with a student via social media and was exchanging explicit images with the student over the course of six months. Further investigation revealed that the suspect had also engaged in sexual contact with the minor student. The teacher, 22-year-old Andrew Ontiveros, was arrested for crimes against the child at least once.

This case is currently under investigation by the Crimes Against Children Unit. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Det. M. Monday, April 30
At 10:01 p.m. in the 2100 block of E. Houston Ave., the Visalia Police Department received a report of an auto theft which had just occurred. While en route to the call an officer observed a vehicle matching the description of the stolen car near Lovers Lane and Mineral King Ave. The vehicle was located moments later at Lovers Lane and Westcott, where it had been involved in a traffic collision with a parked vehicle. Witnesses directed officers to the 900 block of S. Lovers Lane where the suspect was last seen fleeing. During the investigation it was learned that the suspect had ran into a residence where he was discovered hiding by a resident. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Andrew James Woods, fled the residence and attempted to hide however; California Highway Patrol Airplane 41 was overhead and located the suspect nearby. He was taken into custody without further incident. Woods was on active probation for auto theft and had an active arrest warrant for another auto theft case. The suspect was booked into the Tulare County Adult Pre-trial Facility for charges related to the auto theft, burglary, and his outstanding warrant. 

Tuesday, May 1
At 5:18 a.m. in the 2600 block of N. Zachary, officers responded to a carjacking. An unknown male wearing a mask pulled out a gun and ordered a woman to get out of her car. After she exited the vehicle, the man got in and drove away from the scene. The case will be forwarded to the Violent Crimes Unit and anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to contact the Visalia Police Department.

Thursday, May 3
At 9:45 p.m. in the 2000 block of W. Tulare Ave., officers were dispatched to Domino’s Pizza for a report of a robbery that had just occurred. An unknown subject entered the business, pulled out a gun, and retrieved an unknown amount of money from the cash register before fleeing on foot. The case will be forwarded off to the Violent Crimes Unit and anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Visalia Police Department.

Wednesday, May 2
At 4:57 p.m. near the intersection of County Center and Campus streets, an officer attempted a traffic stop. The driver, 39-year-old Steve Lopez, parked the vehicle in the parking lot at the shopping center in this area and fled from the vehicle on foot. He then ran into the nearby Pizza Factory restaurant where he barricaded himself inside one of the restrooms. As a precautionary measure, customers were evacuated. He was ultimately apprehended with the assistance of a police canine. Lopez was transported to Kaweah Delta Hospital to be treated for his injuries. Lopez was booked into the Tulare County Pretrial Facility for Driving Under the Influence and Resisting Arrest.
