Thief returns to the scene with trunk full of stolen citrus
Deputies pull over man near Lindsay because his car matched a photo of the thief’s vehicle
LINDSAY – A man who stole a trunk full of fruit from orchards near Lindsay was caught after he circled back to drive past the crime scene being investigated by deputies.
At 10:25 a.m. on April 3, deputies from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 1000 block of Citrus Avenue in Lindsay regarding an ongoing theft of lemons. Deputies interviewed employees and were provided with photos of the suspect in the act of stealing fruit out of the orchard and placing it the trunk of his car. The thief was identified as 49-year-old Francisco Magana Lemus.
While investigating the scene, deputies saw a vehicle drive by matching the description from the photograph. Deputies stopped the vehicle, identified Lemus as the driver and then found a trunk full of fruit in the car.
Detectives from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Ag Crimes Unit responded and took over the investigation. Lemus was arrested for theft of the lemons and possession of the stolen oranges.
