Visalia Medical Clinic announces new gastroenterologist Shirley Pua, MD

VISALIA – Some doctors come to the Central Valley because it is an underserved area. Others move here for the hands-on experience before moving on to more advanced facilities. But the newest doctor at Visalia Medical Clinic is moving to Visalia to be closer to her family and to live in a close-knit community.

“I chose Visalia because I’m always attracted to the more personal and friendly attitude of a smaller town,” said Shirley Pua, MD. “I was also impressed by the warmth and support of the medical staff at Visalia Medical Clinic.”

Pua comes to Visalia from Mercy Gastroenterology in Iowa, and is now accepting patients as a gastroenterologist at Visalia Medical Clinic.

Dr. Pua completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Texas – Health Science Center in Houston.

Dr. Pua is certified by the American Board of Gastroenterology, and is a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the American Gastroenterological Association.

As a student, Dr. Pua was always interested in math and science and “it didn’t take much convincing from my father to pursue a course in medicine,” she recalled. “I love being a doctor and taking care of my patients.” Dr. Pua was later inspired by her mentor, a gastroenterologist who was the head of the internal medicine program during her medical internship.

Visalia Medical Clinic, an affiliate of the Kaweah Delta Medical Foundation, offers the expertise of more than 50 providers. VMC also offers a lab, imaging including CT and MRI and the QuickCare walk-in clinic, at 5400 W. Hillsdale, Visalia. The clinic is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; with extended and weekend hours at QuickCare. For information, call 739-2000 or visit www.vmchealth.com.
