Local Agency Formation Commission reviews annexations, establishes boundaries

@TheSunGazette

VISALIA — Have you ever wondered why city boundaries don’t look more square on the map? Questioned why the city limits continue to expand while there is still vacant property within the boundaries? Or why cities grow around county property leaving it cut off from county services?

Well, the agency that makes those decisions would like you to get more involved and help find the answers or be part of the solution.

The Tulare County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) is seeking applications from members of the public interested in serving as the Public Member of the Local Agency Formation Commission. LAFCO is an independent, quasi-legislative agency that reviews city annexations and the establishment of boundaries and authorized services for numerous local, agencies including fire, community services and water districts.

The commission meets at 2 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month in the Tulare County Board of Supervisors’ Chambers, located at 2800 W. Burrel Ave. in Visalia. The four-year term would start May 7, 2018 or thereafter and last through May 1, 2022.

Applicants must be residents of Tulare County, be able to regularly attend LAFCO meetings and not be officers or employees of the County or any city or special district (not including School Districts) in the County. The public member is a public official and is required to file a standard financial disclosure statement annually with the California Fair Political Practices Commission.

All application materials must be submitted to Tulare County LAFCO at 210 N. Church St., Suite B, Visalia CA 93291, by March 2, 2018. The commission will make the new member appointment at its meeting after the application deadline has closed. Application forms are available at the LAFCO office or online at lafco.co.tulare.ca.us.
