LINDSAY – A staple in the Lindsay community, Willie’s Market has been around for some time. However, when it first changed ownership 18 years ago it needed some improvements. Now it’s façade and well manicured grounds have earned it the Lindsay Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Beautification Award.
Instead of just keeping up the business, Kulwinder Bains, who purchased the market in 2000, decided to invest some serious effort into the building. He said owning the business at the corner of Tulare Road and Elmwood Avenue has meant more than just an income for his family, it has come to represent a community in which his children have grown up.
Bains wanted the building to match the way he felt about the business, so he began working on renovating the exterior in 2012. He also upgraded the interior of the store to keep up with new health department regulations for food service establishments.
Bains said he understands that starting over, while keeping the store open during all these improvements, was not easy but was well worth creating a symbol of pride for his family and community.
Willlie’s Market may not bear Bains’ name but it definitly carries a connotation of community pride.
