Aztecs sitting on top of league standings
The Farmersville Aztecs defeated the Laton Mustangs 52-12 on Friday, Oct. 18 at Garry L. Meek Stadium in Farmersville. The victory capped off Homecoming week.
Farmersville once again let the visiting team score first when Laton scored on their first possession of the game. The Mustangs failed on a two point conversion and led 6-0.
The Aztecs got onto the scoreboard late in the first quarter on a 41 yard touchdown pass from Sam Metcalf to Jose De La Cruz. De La Cruz also ran in the two point conversion and Farmersville led 8-6 with 3:29 left in the first quarter.
Felipe Cornejo made an interception for the Aztecs to stall a Mustang drive. Farmersville took advantage and scored on a fourth and 12 play with a touchdown pass from Metcalf to Jose Solis. The Aztecs failed on a two point conversion and led 14-6 with 9:57 left in the half.
The Mustangs scored fourth and goal from the eight yard line. They attempted a two point conversion to tie the game, but Johnny Guzman sacked the Laton Quarterback and the Aztecs led 14-12 with 6:48 left in the half.
Metcalf connected with De La Cruz again and scored on a nine yard pass. The extra point was missed and the Aztecs led 20-12 with 5:21 left in the half.
The Aztecs scored on their next possession with a 12 yard touchdown pass from Metcalf to Greg Torres. The extra point was no good and Farmersville led 26-12 with 2:05 left in the half.
Laton tried a Hook & Ladder pass on their next possession, but fumbled the ball to the Aztecs who took possession at midfield with 1:39 left in the half. Farmersville scored on a 17 yard touchdown pass from Metcalf to Jose Solis and Joel Tapia made the extra point. The Aztecs led 33-12 with 28 seconds left in the half.
Farmersville scored on a 15 yard touchdown pass from Metcalf to Solis and led 39-12 with 7:11 left in the third quarter.
Metcalf connected with De La Cruz for an eight yard touchdown and the Aztecs were up 46-12 with 5:09 left in the third.
Anthony Azevedo put the final points on the board with a two yard touchdown run for the Aztecs to give them a 52-12 lead. The game went to a running clock in the fourth quarter because the Aztecs were ahead by more than 35 points.
Metcalf had 339 yards passing and seven touchdowns and did not play most of the fourth quarter.
De La Cruz had seven receptions for 111 yards and three touchdowns. Solis had eight receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns.
Azevedo ran the ball 19 times for 147 yards and a touchdown.
