Fry continuing success at UC Davis

Katie Fry is one of the best runners to come out of Exeter Union High School. Fry graduated from Exeter Union High School as a four-year CIF state championship qualifier in the 800. In her four years she finished 9th in the state as a sophomore and finished in 7th place as a senior. She also captured Central Sequoia League titles in four events as a senior.

After graduation from Exeter, Fry packed her things and headed to UC Davis to see how competitive she could be at the next level.

“I was a small fish in a big pound,” said Fry. “I figured I would struggle out here.”

In her freshman year of Cross Country she placed in 14th just shy of being named to the All-Big West Conference. In her sophomore year she finished in 5th place. Another big accomplishment for Fry was she crossed the finished line as the Aggies’ No. 3 scorer four times in 2012 at the Pac-12 Preview, Pre-Nationals, Big West and the NCAA West Regional’s. But were Fry really excelled has been in Track. Her freshman year she was selected as the team’s freshman of the year. In 2013 Fry was the Big West Champion in 3,000-meter steeplechase, scoring 10 points for the Aggies who would go on to be crowned the Big West Champions.

Fry also qualified for the NCAA West Region Prelim meet at the University of Texas.

While at the NCAA West Region Prelim meet, Fry would qualify for the NCAA Championships by finishing with a school-record time of 9:58.97.

The previous school record was 10:16.46 set at Mt. Sac Relays this season by Fry.

Fry is also ranked fifth in 800 with a 2:08.57 which she ran in the Causeway Classic Dual vs. Sac State last season.

This Saturday Fry will be competing against the best that the NCAA has to offer. Fry is hoping to place in the top eight to become an All-American.

The prelims are on this Thursday with the Finals being held on Saturday.

”It is a lot more competitive at this level,” said Fry “It’s more intense and I am enjoying it.”

Fry misses home a lot, and has made the tough transition of leaving her home of Lemon Cove and has adjusted to life near Sacramento.

While she is attending UC Davis, Fry is pursuing a degree in exercise biology. From the looks of it, she is translating what she is learning in the class room and applying that knowledge to the track.
