Monarchs tame Cavalier streak

The Exeter girls soccer team showed no signs of intimidation when they stepped onto the CVC soccer field Friday night to take on a team that had won 112 straight league games.

The CVC girls had a distinct size advantage as they do over most league opponents and they spent much of the first half pressuring the Monarchs defense with three early shots testing Exeter goalkeeper Kara Bryant.

Nearly 30 minutes into the game, a counter attack sent Monarchs leading scorer Irene Moreno down the right sideline. Moreno cut to the middle of the field then rolled a left footed shot past the goalkeeper to push Exeter ahead 1-0.

CVC continued their offensive assault at the beginning of the second half applying even more pressure but failed to produce any quality chances until the 10-minute mark when Bryant punched away a skipping shot for a corner kick. This led to three straight big saves to keep Exeter in the lead for the next 10 minutes.

With just over seven minutes left in the game, an unlucky bounce led to a penalty kick for CVC when Nicole Bouvia converted for a 1-1 tie.

With the momentum in their favor, CVC went for the game winner, finding several scoring chances in the final three minutes and continued their attack into overtime.

Only saves by Kara Bryant kept the score even as the Cavaliers’ winning streak came to an end.

Bryant was an unlikely starter in the game after returning from an injury early in the season. She then missed a game earlier in the week due to a car accident.

“I’m happy with the result. 1-1 is a tremendous accomplishment,” Exeter coach Darin Lasky said.

“There’s a reason why they’ve won 112 games in a row. We were outsized but we hung on. I’m proud of them,” Lasky said about his team’s effort.

The Lady Monarchs are now 2-1-1 in Central Sequoia League play as they prepare to face Kingsburg and Immanuel this week.
