Alba leads Aztecs to one-goal win
The Farmersville girls soccer team opened league play with a win over Orange Cove on Friday, Jan. 10 in front of a home crowd.
The Lady Aztecs went on the attack right away scoring in the first minute of the game on their way to a 3-2 victory that came down to the final shot of the game.
Forward Stephanie Alba continued her productive season, scoring all three Farmersville goals and bringing her season total to 17.
Each goal featured Alba slashing through the defense and finding space for a shot on goal.
Orange Cove scored to tie the game at 1-1 in the 10th minute when a free kick was deflected into the goal. Alba’s second goal gave Farmersville a 2-1 lead before halftime.
Alba struck again in the opening minutes of the second half for a 3-1 Aztecs lead. Orange Cove added a late goal cutting the lead to 3-2 and threatening to even the score as the time ran down.
In the final minutes, the Titans were awarded a penalty kick and a chance to tie the game but the attempt sailed over the goal frame harmlessly and the Aztecs held onto the lead.
Farmersville needed a final save from goalkeeper Marcela Borjas who had 18 saves throughout the game. The Lady Aztecs are now 1-0 in league play and 7-6 overall. They return to the pitch at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17 at Lindsay High School.
