Symphony searches ‘soul’ for holiday concert

Hope Garcia will sing Christmas classics from Motown at Sequoia Symphony’s annual holiday show on Saturday, Dec. 8

VISALIA – The holidays have a harmonious relationship with the symphony. Our favorite holiday hymnals are heightened by the orchestra. What would your favorite film of the season be without a soundtrack that wrapped up Christmas with the strings of the cello and bows of violinists?

The Sequoia Symphony’s holiday concert has become a must see for local music goers and this year’s program will focus on a somewhat forgotten sounds of the season – soul. Local singer and voice coach Hope Garcia will put her distinct mark on favorite Christmas classics old and new from the soundtrack of Motown at this concert on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Garcia developed her musical chops singing in her father’s church in the Los Angeles area. As a teenager, she sang at family events and parties before performing with names such as Stevie Wonder, Jon B, and Carolyn Dennis. Currently, you can find her headlining shows around the region with Central Valley-born band, Mezcal, ’90s hip-hop, R&B group, The Box, and the Sequoia Symphony.

There will be two performances at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 8. Tickets range from $22 to $45 and can be purchased online at www.foxvisalia.org. The Visalia Fox Theatre is located at 300 Main St. in Visalia. For more information, contact the Sequoia Symphony by calling 559-732-8600 or by emailing info@sequoiasymphonyorchestra.com.
