‘Read to Ride’ a fair deal

tulare county – Sometimes children need some encouragement to dust off their books and read. The Tulare County Fair hopes they can entice children to read more this summer with their “Read to Ride” program.

All public libraries in Tulare County are participating in The Read to Ride contest which is open to all children in kindergarten through eighth grade. To receive the carnival ride tickets, children are required to read two library books and write a brief summary or draw a picture about the book on the official form. After the form and report are given to the librarian, the child will receive two ride tickets for every two books read.

“The Tulare County Fair is pleased to offer this program to entice children to read, along with the many learning opportunities each day of the fair itself,” said Fair CEO Pamela Fyock. “Seeing wild animals for the first time, learning about livestock, science and panning for gold are just a few of the educational opportunities our fair offers.”

Throughout fair week, fairgoers can enjoy a traditional big-top circus, an exotic animal exhibit, a new look at history through the Gypsy Time Travelers, puppet shows, racing pigs and more which is included with the price of admission.

The Fair will also feature a series of ticketed motorsports events: an ATV and tractor pull on Thursday, Sept. 14; a monster truck show on Friday, Sept. 15; and the Demolition Derby on Saturday, Sept. 16. Fairgoers can also compete in the corn dog-eating contest or the pie-eating contest, or apply to perform on one of the community stages during the Fair.

Carnival wristbands sell for $20 each prior to Sept. 12, and $30 during Fair week. A FastPass upgrade, which allows wristband-holders to go to the front of the line for all carnival rides, is available for $15. To purchase wristbands and admission tickets and to enter contests, visit www.tcfair.org or call the Tulare County Fairgrounds at 686-4707 for further information.

Each child is able to submit one form per day. The program ends on Wednesday, Sept. 13, and ride tickets are valid on Thursday, Sept. 14. This offer is valid while supplies last.
