TRMC terminates CEO Shawn Bolouki’s contract

Tulare Regional Medical Center (TRMC) took a calculated risk last week by becoming the first hospital in Tulare County to outsource its management.

On Jan. 9, TRMC’s Board of Directors unanimously approved and entered into a management services agreement with HealthCare Conglomerate Associates, LLC (HCCA). The Los Angeles-based HCCA will be managing the administration of the hospital. HCCA is a member of VHA, Inc., a network of more than 1,400 not-for-profit hospitals and 111,000 non-acute care facilities nationwide. VHA’s membership includes a quarter of the hospitals in the United States. HCCA bills itself as a nationally renowned turnaround expert specializing in mega-scale construction projects and physician recruitment. The HCCA Management Team began work on Monday, Jan. 13. HCCA Chief Restructing Officer, Tony Jones, will be relocating from the East Coast. He is scheduled to be onsite Tuesday, Jan. 21.

“The Board is very excited to be working with the HCCA Team and have confidence in the expertise they bring to our Hospital,” read a statement released by the Board on Jan. 10.

The Board was unable to negotiate a transfer and assignment of Chief Executive Officer Shawn Bolouki’s employment agreement as part of the agreement with HCCA. This resulted in TRMC’s termination of Bolouki’s contract as CEO. Bolouki was credited with resolving the Medical Tower concrete dalamination, achieving ISO 9001 Certification (along with many other awards, opening West Street Healthcare Center, securing a half million grant to open a clinic in Earlimart, negotiating reimbursement contracts and reigning in of expenses. An appreciation reception was held for Bolouki on Jan. 11 at the Evolutions Plaza Conference Room to thank Bolouki for his “tireless efforts.”

“On behalf of the entire Board, we thank and appreciate Shawn’s service and commitment to our hospital and the community of Tulare,” the statement read.
