Lindsay Gardens sunsets mural
A skilled nursing facility in Lindsay is planning a major remodel of its front lobby, unfortunately, it will take a sentimental mural with it.
Yesterday, Lindsay Gardens began work on remodeling its front lobby. As part of its effort to continue to upgrade and modernize its facility, owner Doug Smith said the mural will be painted over.
“We understand we are losing something sentimental to people, but we are also gaining something that will better serve our patients,” said Smith, owner of SmithCare Skilled Nursing Facilities in Lindsay and Porterville.
The mural was painted by Porterville muralist Theresa Fowler shortly after the facility opened in 1996. Charlene Turner, the dietary manager at Lindsay Gardens for nearly 20 years, said she will miss the mural.
“It’s something you’re used to seeing every day when you come through the door,” said Turner, who has worked at Lindsay Gardens since it opened except for a two-year hiatus. “To me it represents what Lindsay Gardens is. It is Lindsay Gardens. It’s sentimental to me.”
Linda Martinez, director of staff development, said she felt the same way.
“I hate to see it go, but it’s time for a change and something beautiful will come out of it,” said Martinez, who has worked at Lindsay Gardens for the last 16 years.
SmithCare’s Mark Mann, who helped design the project, said the lobby will have a more updated look with more coffee tables, couches and armchairs.
“Similar to Sweet Brier Plaza, it’s one of those projects people question until they see the end result,” Mann said. “The project will create more social spaces to meet the needs of residents and their visiting families. We want the lobby to be more inviting.”
