COS to offer two supervisor academies

tulare – Tulare County is sought after for its readily available workforce of workers, but is often woefully understaffed when it comes to finding skilled labor and supervisors.

Employer surveys conducted by the Training & Education committee of the Visalia Economic Development Corporation (VEDC) validate nationwide reports indicating the availability of skilled labor as a critical factor in doing business. The feedback reveals not only the need for “technical skills,” such as those necessary for a maintenance mechanic position, but also “soft skills,” such as communication and leadership skills needed to effectively work in our culturally and generationally diverse workforce.

Starting in this month and continuing in August, College of the Sequoias’ Training Resource Center is offering two Front Line Supervisory Academies designed for anyone in a supervisory role or aspiring to be in one. The class will focus on soft skills training in areas such as communication, teamwork, cultural diversity, conflict resolution, problem solving and delegation. Previous attendees have said the following about this training:

“There was real life work-related experience. All subjects were important. Conflict was important because we deal with it on a daily basis”

“I learned different techniques of handling personalities, coaching, conflict, problem solving, and change”

The first class will be held July 11 through Aug. 17, 2017 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the COS Tulare Center. There will be two cohorts; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Valued at $499 per person, funding is available for qualified employers. Please contact us for more information.

The second class will be held Aug. 23 through Nov. 8, 2017 at Jo-Ann Distribution Center on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. This class is $499 per person.

To find out more about these courses, funding or to register, please call or email the COS Training Resource Center at 559-688-3130 or trainingcenter@cos.edu. You can also visit www.cos.edu/trainingcenter.

College of the Sequoias Community College District is a two-year California community college offering educational and enrichment programs for the residents of its district in Tulare and Kings counties.

In addition to the campus in Visalia, COS operates a full-service center in Hanford that is home to the college’s police and fire academies. COS also opened its Tulare College Center in January 2013. It is a full-service college center and the home of COS’s agriculture and other programs.
