ROCK’n Brewery in Exeter
By Amy C. Witt
exeter – Rocky Hill Brewing is proud to present Tulare County’s newest hometown craft brewery with tasty brew and a country pub. The brewpub located in the outskirts of Exeter is a place for friends and family to meet, relax, laugh and enjoy a mix of fresh and delicious IPAs, stouts and beer on tap.
With a wide range of flavors, some of Rocky Hill Brewing’s popular beers are the Indian Pale Ale, better known as IPA. An IPA is a hoppy beer style that is broken into three main styles: American, English and Double/Imperial. “Blue Dream,” a New England style, is one of the most popular that customers can always expect to enjoy. A hazy beer, it is heavy in citrus notes. This IPA is made of 100% mosaic hops with very little bitterness and an abundance of well blended flavors that include citrus and orange rind. The New England Style Double IPA, “Juice-A-Rillo” is higher in alcohol content. Created with 100% Amarillo hops, it possesses a citrus and candy-like flavor. Brewed with a combo of a Amarillo, mosaic and centennial hops, “It’s Complicated” was a hit at the Saturday, April 22 grand opening.
Along with the IPAs, the “Toliman” is a coffee porter and a hot seller. Made by cold brewing coffee right into the beer, it is crafted with a Guatemalan roast while the coffee beans are roasted in Fresno. The name, “Toliman” was inspired by the Volcan Toliman in Guatemala, which is a large andesitic stratovalcano that rises above the south shore of Lake Atitlan. Stout beer is also hand crafted within the walls of the brewery. A stout is a dark beer that is created with roasted malt, barely, hops, water and yeast. Rocky Hill Brewing’s “Diamond in a Rough” is a favored traditional stout with no added flavors.
“I think a lot of people are going to like our beer because they can expect a little more,” Ben Litwack, owner of Rocky Hill Brewing expressed. Litwack graduated with an enology degree from Fresno State University. Since he was four years old, he has been working in the family winery business for his father, Andy and mother, Sydney Norgard. The original location of the brewery was his families company, Bev-Pack, establish in 2003, who specialized in contract packing for other wines. As the wine business was dying, five months ago, Litwack was faced with the option of shutting the doors to his facility or diving into a new opportunity within the brewing industry. Already having the facility, permits and equipment, Litwack had everything he needed to offer the best brew around. Along with Litwack , Oscar Fuentes is the head brewer, contributing to the mastery and art of the brewing, creating recipes while being responsible for the majority of the brewing process with Litwack assistance. Fuentes and Litwack are also partnering an additional brewing and pub location in Fresno.
Eight beers are always crisp and on tap. The brewery strives to constantly rotate beverages and introduce and try new things. Beers like the “Mocha Tier” and “Near Earth Object,” also known as “NEO” provide excitement with their tasty blends of flavors. The “Mocha Tier” is a brown porter with an array of chocolate and coffee flavors. Many compliment it for its outstanding taste and its resemblance to an iced coffee. Using comet hops which are intriguing parentage of English Sunshine and Native American hops, this is also a standard IPA.
Beer lover’s can enjoy the pub’s beautiful and picnic-like Exeter charm country setting. They welcome pop-up chairs and outside food. Currently, Rocky Hill Brewing is working with local restaurants and food trucks so customers can enjoy their lunch and dinner with their refreshing brew. Litwack expresses that the response from the community has been great and expansion for the company is in the works to increase capacity. Rocky Hill Brewing is located at 20147 Ave. 306.
