Woodlake Awards: Making Things ‘Happening’

Lauri Polly moved to the foothills north of Woodlake in 2005 after selling her ranch in Visalia. She and her husband wanted to get back to rural living, but the move also gave Lauri a chance to get involved in helping her community.

“I didn’t know how active of a community Woodlake was until I moved here,” Lauri said. “Now I look at it as this hidden gem in the foothills.”

Lauri has been a graphic designer for 30 years. Her experience and knowledge in the inindustry continues to supply lawyers, CPAs and others businesses with all of their advertising and marketing materials. Nestled on 10 acres in the foothills, Lauri now spends much of her time finding ways driving into town to helping local organizations make the most of their fund-raisers.

“When I moved Sally Pace became my neighbor,” Lauri said. “And when you know Sally you know everyone.”

Lauri plays a key role in promoting many of Woodlake’s biggest events and fund-raisers including the Woodlake Valley Chamber of Commerce’s annual Car Show in July, the July 3rd Blast sponsored by the Woodlake Kiwanis Club and posters for the Woodlake High School Foundation events and Drama Productions.

“I am really impressed with Woodlake as a community,” Lauri said. “The amount of parent involvement at the schools, especially the high school, is amazing. There is this hometown feeling of support for everything that is really remarkable.”

One of the most rewarding projects she has worked on is providing all of the graphic design for the What’s Happening in the Foothills magazine. The seasonal magazine is published by the Woodlake Kiwanis Club and promotes events going on in the foothills communities, including Woodlake, Exeter, Lindsay, Springville, Porterville, Three Rivers and Sequoia National Park. The Spring issue published at the end of February and the summer edition will print in June. In addition to the calendar, the magazine includes articles featuring local personalities, information about local non-profits and a worship listing for local churches.

“the whole idea is to get the word out around the county about these communities,” Lauri said. “There is so much going on out here.”

Her work on the magazine and its goal of promoting Woodlake throughout Tulare County made her a great choice for Business of the Year in Woodlake. But Lauri’s reach goes far beyond Woodlake and Tulare County. Green Dragon Graphics also provides all of the design for NEXT EXIT, a directory of restaurants, activities and businesses along interstate highway exits.
