Last year, over 100 million people came out to shop at independently-owned small businesses on the day. Now, in its third year, Small Business Saturday will be even bigger. “Get your business onboard and lets get the community of Exeter to Shop Local this holiday season!,” reads the Exeter Chamber of Commerce newsletter this month. “Let’s come together and Shop Small this November 24th and let’s make this the biggest day of the year for small businesses!”
While SBS seems to have taken hold more on the East Coast and Midwest, it is slowly making its way across the West. David Hendrickson, founder of Hendrick’s Boards in Orange County, California said he used the opportunity to offer 10% off his custom apparel and skateboard decks used to rescue animals.
“An increase in sales on Small Business Saturday allowed us to increase our donations to animal rescue non-profits and help more animals in need,” Hendrickson said. “Since we donate 20-40% of every purchase to our network of 150 animal rescue non-profits this increase in sales helped us do even more.”
